How We Work

Intake

On a given night of shelter operations, IRWS programming takes place at two separate locations. The first location is the intake center, located at the Friends Meeting House on 4th St. and L St. The guests arrive at intake between 5:15PM-6:15PM each evening, sign in, and help themselves to a hot drink.

The first time a guest arrives at the intake center, they go through a comprehensive intake process where we collect information about their demographic, previous living situations, and health issues. Each guest is required to have his/her picture taken and sign a code of conduct before being admitted to the shelter.

If the guest has completed the intake process on a previous night, they go through an abbreviated intake. This involves a one-on-one conversation with a trained intake volunteer who assesses the guest’s eligibility to enter the shelter on the basis of two criteria:

1. The guest’s ability to follow instructions.

2. Whether the guest presents a danger to himself/herself or others.

If the guest meets the above criteria, then he/she is admitted for the night. Each guest MUST go through intake every night.

Around 6:00pm, evening driver volunteers begin transporting guests from the intake center to the host site.
